Helsinki police describe Malminkartano killing as exceptionally brutal
Helsinki police have completed their preliminary investigation into a violent homicide in the Malminkartano district, where an 80-year-old man was killed in March 2026, according to a report by Finnish public broadcaster Yle. The case has now been referred to prosecutors for consideration of charges.
The victim was found dead at his home on Luutnantintie after emergency services responded to a witness report. The suspect, born in the 1990s, fled the scene but was quickly apprehended at a nearby restaurant based on descriptions provided by witnesses. At the time of arrest, the suspect was heavily intoxicated, with a blood alcohol level exceeding 2.0 per mille, and had also consumed multiple benzodiazepine medications, leading to additional suspicion of drug offences.
Police describe the crime as particularly brutal and vicious. The suspect allegedly stabbed the victim at least twice with a knife and repeatedly struck and kicked him over several minutes. The attack was so prolonged that the suspect briefly left the scene before returning to continue the assault. Investigators also discovered that the suspect had recorded part of the violence on a mobile phone.
During questioning, the suspect admitted to committing the killing but claimed to have no memory of specific details. Authorities have been unable to establish a clear motive. The case will now proceed to prosecutorial review for potential murder charges.
