Students complete 450-kilometer cycling journey from Reykjavik to Akureyri in three days
Two students from Reykjavik embarked on a remarkable 450-kilometer cycling journey to Akureyri, completing the trip in just three days. The adventure, which concluded this morning around seven, included a preliminary 90-kilometer ride to Hvalfjörður as part of their training.
The idea for this challenging project stemmed from a conversation between the two friends, Einar Dagur Brynjarsson and Þorbergur Rúnarsson, while playing Minecraft. They decided to make the trip a significant project for their upcoming school year. Both boys, aged 15, are students at Réttarholtsskóli and are set to begin the 10th grade in the fall.
Einar mentioned that they quickly organized training, with their major exercise being the ride to Hvalfjörður. After completing this leg, they camped overnight in Reykholt. Although some friends and family initially considered the idea somewhat crazy, it didn’t deter the boys from proceeding with their plan.
They began their journey on Tuesday morning at around six, cycling as much as they could while their parents followed them by car to provide support. They found that nighttime cycling was ideal due to reduced traffic, allowing them to ride for approximately nine hours daily.
Despite the challenges, they found the adventure enjoyable. Their final stretch was completed overnight, as they cycled from Blönduós to Akureyri, finishing with a treat at a bakery early this morning.
In addition to their project, they aimed to raise funds for a local charity honoring Einar’s grandmother’s 70th birthday, successfully collecting 275,000 kr for the organization. The boys are content with their week’s achievement and the impact it has had.
