A pod of around 80 pilot whales was driven ashore and slaughtered in Sandavágur late Sunday evening, local authorities confirmed to Faroese broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya.

The hunt, known locally as a grindadráp, took place west of the village. Kári Thorsteinsson, the district administrator overseeing the event, stated that the operation proceeded smoothly and that the whales would provide a substantial amount of meat for distribution.

Processing of the whales has already begun, with plans to distribute the meat to local residents by Monday evening, according to Thorsteinsson. An audio interview with the administrator was broadcast on Faroese radio earlier today.

The traditional hunt, regulated by Faroese authorities, involves driving pods of pilot whales into shallow bays where they are killed for their meat and blubber. The practice remains a longstanding but controversial part of Faroese culture.
