Pete Parkkosen’s childhood favourite treat to be served at Eurovision viewing party near his home
The Finnish municipality of Pihtipudas is celebrating Pete Parkkosen’s Eurovision appearance by organising free public viewing events, including one near his childhood home where his favourite childhood snack—mokkapalat (mocha squares)—will be served.
The rural community of roughly 3,700 residents has embraced the Eurovision excitement, with two free viewing parties planned for the contest’s semi-final and final in May. One will be held at the Pihtipudas sports hall, while the other takes place in Elämäjärvi village, where Parkkosen grew up. The local village association chair, Jaana Kälkäjä, revealed that mokkapalat—a traditional Finnish coffee-time pastry—were once Parkkosen’s favourite treat.
“It feels amazing that someone from a small village can reach such heights,” Kälkäjä said, adding that many locals believe Parkkosen and co-performer Linda Lampenius will win with their song Liekinheitin (Flame Thrower). Finland currently leads betting odds for the contest.
Both venues will feature large screens broadcasting Yle’s Eurovision coverage, with refreshments provided. The Pihtipudas hall will offer coffee and pastries for 150 attendees, while Elämäjärvi’s event includes a buffet with mokkapalat. Parkkosen’s father, Kari, has promised to share live updates from Vienna, where the contest is held.
If Finland wins, Pihtipudas may host a public square celebration, though plans remain tentative. “We’re rooting for Pete and Linda—we have to prepare for victory,” said municipal secretary Samuel Demarco.
The Eurovision Song Contest takes place in Vienna from 10–16 May, with Finland performing in the first semi-final on 12 May. The final airs on 16 May.
