Ferry cancellations leave Skúvoy residents to charter private vessel

The ferry Sildberin has failed to sail to the Faroese island of Skúvoy for two consecutive days due to weather conditions, forcing residents to charter their own vessel, Kringvarp Føroya reports.

Strandferðslan, the Faroese public ferry operator, cancelled both yesterday’s evening crossing and today’s scheduled trip, citing adverse weather. With no alternative transport provided, Skúvoy’s local council arranged a private boat to maintain connections with the mainland.

Jóannes í Hoygarðinum, mayor of Skúvoy, expressed strong dissatisfaction with the situation in a radio interview. Residents have criticised the lack of reliable ferry service, which has now disrupted travel for 48 hours.

The island, home to around 40 inhabitants, relies entirely on ferry links for transport of people, goods, and supplies. Repeated cancellations have heightened concerns over the resilience of the route, operated solely by Sildberin under Strandferðslan’s management.
