A district court in South Karelia, Finland, has begun hearing a case against a former company administrator accused of aggravated embezzlement after allegedly siphoning at least €180,000 from an unnamed firm over a ten-year period, reports Finnish public broadcaster Yle.

The prosecutor claims the administrator, responsible for handling employee salaries—including their own—systematically misused their position between 2013 and 2022. Methods included paying themselves inflated wages, fabricating bonus transfers, and falsely claiming compensation for unused vacation days despite having taken the leave.

The prosecution is seeking a minimum sentence of one year and eight months’ suspended imprisonment, combined with community service. They argue the crime qualifies as aggravated due to the prolonged duration, the company’s precarious financial situation at the time, and the use of multiple deceptive transactions to conceal the theft.

The South Karelia District Court has allocated three days for the trial, which commenced on Monday.
