Sweden’s left-green opposition bloc has no unified stance on nuclear energy or fuel tax cuts, according to an analysis by public broadcaster SVT’s political commentator Mats Knutson following Sunday’s party leader debate.

The debate highlighted deep divisions among the Social Democrats, Green Party, Left Party, and Centre Party over how to address rising fuel prices and the role of nuclear power in Sweden’s energy future.

While the ruling government has proposed lowering taxes on petrol and diesel to ease household costs and curb inflation, the opposition remains split. The Social Democrats and Centre Party support the tax reduction, but the Green Party and Left Party oppose it.

Knutson noted that energy policy—particularly nuclear power—has become a contentious issue for the left-green coalition, with no clear consensus on whether to expand or phase out nuclear energy as part of Sweden’s long-term energy strategy.

The debate also touched on broader energy crisis concerns, with politicians warning of potentially the worst energy shortages yet as fuel prices continue to climb.
