Fatal crash on Paimio motorway remains under investigation as cause unclear
A serious collision on the Turku–Helsinki motorway in Paimio on Saturday left one person dead and seven injured after a car drove through a maintenance gap into oncoming traffic, reports Finnish public broadcaster Yle. The driver, now in custody, is suspected of multiple offences, but police have not determined why the vehicle entered the wrong lane.
The deceased victim was a passenger in the suspect’s car, according to detective inspector Valtteri Kemppi of Southwest Finland Police. Two other vehicles travelling toward Turku collided with the wrong-way driver, resulting in non-life-threatening injuries to seven people.
The suspect has been detained and questioned, though Kemppi stated that the motive for driving through the maintenance gap remains unknown. Authorities are investigating the incident as aggravated vehicular homicide, aggravated endangerment of traffic safety, aggravated assault, aggravated drunk driving, and drug-related offences.
The investigation is ongoing.
