The Faroe Islands’ first boat festival of the season took place on Saturday in Toftir, drawing crowds under clear skies, reports Faroese broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya.

Boats departed from Skálafjørður around 11:30 AM, arriving in Toftir an hour later. The event, now in its 21st year, has become a staple of the local calendar in Nes municipality, though it was cancelled in 2020 due to the pandemic.

Organiser Kristian Poulsen told KVF that the festival began in 2005 as a one-time fundraiser for a school trip but has since grown into an annual tradition. Saturday’s programme included family activities in the afternoon and evening entertainment for adults, such as live music and brewing demonstrations.

Poulsen noted that the event’s enduring popularity was unexpected when it first launched. “We hoped it might happen again, but we never imagined it would become this big,” he said.
