The Minister of Justice has requested information from the National Registry regarding the name change of Mohammad Kourani, who was recently sentenced to eight years in prison for various crimes. The Minister stated that provisions for name changes are not intended to allow criminals to conceal their identities.

Gudrún Hafsteinsdóttir, the Justice Minister, has asked for data on how the law regarding name changes has been interpreted in Kourani’s case. This review will help determine whether changes to the law or stricter enforcement are necessary.

Mohammad Kourani, who was convicted of attempted murder among other offenses, recently changed his name to Mohamed Thor Jóhannesson. He has an extensive criminal record in Iceland.

The Minister emphasized that the legal provision is not designed for criminals to better integrate into Icelandic society. Instead, it was enacted with consideration for individuals who share names with offenders and the negative impact this can have on them. The legislation in Iceland is similar to that of neighboring countries.
