Multiple injuries and widespread public intoxication marked Sweden’s Walpurgis Night celebrations, with police reporting chaotic scenes in several cities, according to public broadcaster SVT Nyheter.

In central Stockholm, a girl was struck by a firework in Rålambshov Park and taken to hospital by ambulance, police confirmed shortly before midnight. Earlier in the evening, officer Mats Eriksson urged parents to call their children in the area and bring them home. Several intoxicated youths were also taken into protective custody in the park.

In Alvesta, four people were hospitalised after an incident involving a bonfire on private property. Police suspect a flammable liquid was thrown onto the fire, leading to injuries. Authorities have opened an investigation into public endangerment and causing bodily harm. The suspect was also injured in the incident.

In Västmanland County, 25 people—including 13 minors—were detained for intoxication during traditional “cruising” celebrations in Sala. Police also reported isolated cases of assault and drug offences.

Uppsala saw 96 people taken into custody for drunkenness, alongside seven assaults, one case of violence against an official, and eight drug-related offences. Despite this, police described the overall atmosphere as “good” with no major disturbances.

In Gävleborg, nine intoxicated individuals were detained, though no serious incidents were reported.

Walpurgis Night, celebrated annually on April 30, traditionally involves bonfires, student gatherings, and public festivities across Sweden.
