Mandø named Denmark’s island of the year for 2026
The small Wadden Sea island of Mandø has been awarded Denmark’s Island of the Year for 2026, beating finalists Læsø and Bågø, reports DR.
With just 34 permanent residents and an area of eight square kilometres, Mandø is accessible only via a six-kilometre gravel causeway—usable only at low tide. The island sits at the heart of the Wadden Sea National Park, a UNESCO-listed nature reserve.
Claus Christensen, chair of Mandø’s community council, called the win a source of pride. “I’m incredibly proud and happy for everyone here,” he said.
The award, presented by the National Rural Council, Danish Destinations, the Outdoor Council, and the Association of Danish Small Islands, highlights the island’s strong community spirit and commitment to preserving its culture and nature.
“We know exactly what kind of island we are—and want to be,” said Lindy Kjøller, a board member of Danish Destinations. “Tourists are welcome, but Mandø aims to protect its unique character, nature, and wildlife. That’s a smart approach.”
Christensen emphasised the island’s distinct identity. “We’re not Rømø with its big beaches or Fanø with its old houses and traditions. We’re the hidden gem. We stay true to ourselves.”
The prize includes a 50,000-kroner grant, which Christensen said would fund a new community centre. “We’d already decided how to spend the money—if we won, or rather when we won,” he said.
