A man visiting a mental health and substance abuse rehabilitation unit in Turku was stabbed to death by a female resident, according to documents obtained by Finnish public broadcaster Yle. Neither the care provider Esperi Ratamo nor the Southwest Finland Social and Health Care Authority (Varha) are suspected of any crime in connection with the incident.

Police confirmed the victim was a guest at the Esperi Ratamo facility, operated under contract for Varha, when the attack occurred. The suspect, a 34-year-old woman residing at the unit, allegedly stabbed the man multiple times following a dispute. The victim died despite resuscitation attempts.

Investigators stated no others were involved, and no additional threats arose from the incident. Turku police crime commissioner Tuomas Järvenpää declined to comment on specifics of the ongoing homicide investigation, including the relationship between the suspect and victim, but confirmed neither Esperi nor Varha face suspicion.

Esperi Ratamo, which provides round-the-clock housing services for mental health and addiction recovery patients, submitted a report to Varha concluding the fatal attack could not have been prevented. Varha’s oversight unit concurred, noting that “even in a unit experienced with demanding patients, preventing this situation would have been impossible.”

Residents at the facility retain full freedom of movement and may invite visitors. At the time of the incident, staffing levels met contractual requirements, with three employees present for 11 residents. Varha has notified the Finnish National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health (Valvira) about the case.

Internal emails revealed Esperi initially sought to limit publicity, requesting Varha distribute a press release “quietly, without media distribution” in hopes the matter would “not spread further.” Police issued a brief public statement on the day of the incident.
