Expert warns of risks when using ChatGPT for personal crises

A new report from VIVE, Denmark’s National Research and Welfare Analysis Centre, reveals that young people are increasingly turning to ChatGPT for emotional support during difficult times, drawn to its constant availability and non-judgmental responses. However, experts caution that the AI tool may reinforce negative thought patterns, particularly for vulnerable users, as it is not designed to challenge its users’ perspectives.

The report highlights that while ChatGPT provides a sense of calm and accessibility, its inability to contradict or critically assess harmful thought processes could pose risks for those already struggling. Unlike human support systems, the AI lacks the capacity to intervene when users express self-destructive or distorted thinking.

Researchers emphasize that the tool should not replace professional mental health resources, especially for at-risk individuals who may require direct, human-led intervention to break cycles of negative thinking.
