Finnish MP Timo Vornanen has announced his intention to run as a candidate for the Finns Party in the 2027 parliamentary elections, according to a report by national broadcaster Yle.

Vornanen, who currently represents the North Savo-Karelia electoral district, confirmed to Yle that he has discussed his potential candidacy with party secretary Harri Vuorenpää. The Finns Party has not yet made a decision on his nomination, though Vornanen expects clarity on the matter by late summer or autumn.

In an email to Yle, Vornanen stated that feedback from constituents across the district indicates strong support for his candidacy. “People throughout the electoral district have expressed their wish for me to stand in the next elections,” he said.

Vornanen was convicted in December 2025 by Helsinki District Court for assault, two counts of illegal threats, negligent handling of a firearm, and firearms offences. The crimes occurred in central Helsinki in April 2024. The Helsinki Court of Appeal denied his appeal, and he is now considering whether to take the case to the Supreme Court.

“The Supreme Court can only review a rejected appeal under exceptional circumstances,” Vornanen told Yle. “I need to consider how much more energy and money I want to invest in this matter.”

The Finns Party expelled Vornanen from its parliamentary group following the shooting incident, after which he formed his own single-MP group in May 2024.

Yle was unable to reach Vuorenpää or party leader Riikka Purra for comment. Heidi Wilska, chair of the Finns Party’s North Karelia district board, confirmed that Vornanen had expressed his candidacy intentions to her but stated that the decision rests with the national party leadership.
