Tórshavn city council did not apply for football hall funding, says councillor
The majority coalition in Tórshavn’s city council failed to submit an application for funding to build a football hall, according to councillor Tróndur Sigurðsson, who sits on the council’s minority bench. The claim was reported by Faroese broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya.
Earlier this year, the Faroese Football Association invited all municipalities to apply for financial support to construct indoor football facilities. Three applications were approved, with plans now underway to build football halls in Norðragøta (Eystur Municipality), Giljanes, and Trongisvágur.
Sigurðsson stated that the capital’s municipality had intended to build an international-standard football hall near the existing Tjørnir sports complex. “The council was supposed to pursue this further,” he said, referring to plans announced by the then-ruling majority—of which he was also part—in 2023.
Attempts to obtain a statement from Heidi Lava Elgeirsdóttir, chair of the council’s cultural affairs committee, were unsuccessful by the time of Kringvarp Føroya’s midday broadcast.
