Grandson arrested for murder of his own grandfather in Oslo

A teenager has been charged with murder after his grandfather, a man in his 70s, was fatally stabbed in Oslo’s Holmenkollen district, Norwegian police confirmed Wednesday.

The suspect, described as being in his late teens, was apprehended shortly after the attack on Tuesday evening, Dagbladet reports. Police fired warning shots during the arrest, which took place near the crime scene.

The victim’s family released a statement acknowledging the suspect’s identity as the grandson of the deceased. “The family is in deep mourning after a young adult, who has long struggled with mental illness, attacked his beloved grandfather,” the statement read, urging respect for their privacy.

Police received reports of a “violent argument” at a private residence in Holmenkollen at 7:21 PM on Tuesday. Upon arrival, officers found a man with severe injuries who later died at the scene. Several people were present at the address during the incident, and the suspect fled before being captured nearby.

The investigation is ongoing, with witness interviews and forensic examinations conducted overnight. The suspect has been assigned a defense attorney, Unni Fries, who had not yet met with her client as of Wednesday morning.
