The Finnish Defence Forces will implement new safety measures following an investigation into an accident in which a conscript was seriously injured after being trapped under a military truck in April 2025, reports Yle.

A safety review by the Defence Forces has recommended additional training for conscripts on operating near vehicles, as well as stricter procedures for drivers. One key change would require drivers of heavy vehicles to conduct a full visual inspection around their vehicle immediately before moving.

The incident occurred during a field exercise in Säkylä, when a military truck made a sharp right turn while two conscripts were adjusting camouflage netting on the passenger side. One was caught under the rear wheels. The investigation found that blind spots around the vehicle and the conscripts’ positioning in those areas contributed to the accident.

The Defence Forces are preparing to introduce the new guidelines, potentially as early as the next intake of conscripts.
