Kathrine Jansen’s puppy suffers nicotine poisoning after swallowing discarded pouch in Svenstrup

Kathrine Jansen recently faced a harrowing experience while walking her four-month-old puppy, Leah. During their stroll, Leah, being the curious pup she is, discovered a nicotine pouch on the ground and swallowed it almost immediately. Once Kathrine held her, she quickly realized what happened and made Leah vomit. However, a few hours later, both of them ended up at a veterinary hospital in Svenstrup, as Leah had developed nicotine poisoning despite having the pouch for only a short time.

Kathrine expressed her distress, noting the struggle of watching her beloved puppy in such a bad state. After a challenging 24 hours where Leah suffered from fainting, low heart rate, and low body temperature, she gradually recovered. However, Kathrine’s story is not unique; there is a growing trend of nicotine poisoning cases among dogs, particularly in urban areas where nicotine pouches are more likely to be discarded.

Veterinary clinics, like AniCura in Aalborg, have noted an increase in calls from worried pet owners suspecting nicotine poisoning. Dogs, especially smaller breeds, can suffer severe respiratory issues and even fatal outcomes from ingesting these pouches. Veterinarians report treating two to three cases every week—an increase compared to previous years.

In the wake of her experience, Kathrine has taken precautions by ordering a muzzle for Leah. Her Facebook post about the incident garnered widespread attention, highlighting the responsibility of pet owners and the dangers posed by discarded nicotine products in public spaces. Many dog owners echo her concerns, emphasizing the need for vigilance when walking their pets to prevent similar incidents.
