A Faroese seafood processing company has resumed accepting blue ling for human consumption after a years-long pause, driven by rising demand from Nigeria and China, Kringvarp Føroya reports.

Varðin Pelagic, owned by the fishing company Varðan, has restarted operations following “significant changes” in the market, according to Bogi Jacobsen, CEO of Varðan. “Demand for blue ling has grown considerably in recent years,” he said.

Nigeria and China are now the largest buyers of Faroese blue ling for food, Jacobsen confirmed. About 80 percent of the fish processed by Varðin Pelagic will be sold for direct consumption, while the remaining 20 percent will be used for products like fish sauce, sold domestically or exported.
