Swedish defence plans secret cloud services as Europe pushes for digital independence
Sweden’s defence authorities are developing their own classified cloud services while several European countries seek “digital independence” from major tech firms, Swedish public broadcaster SVT reports. The move raises questions about whether reliance on global tech giants poses risks to national IT security—and whether alternatives exist.
On Monday, SVT hosted a live discussion with security reporter John Granlund and Måns Jonasson, an internet expert at the Swedish Internet Foundation, to address public concerns. Viewers were invited to submit questions ahead of the 13:00 broadcast, with responses also provided in a follow-up chat.
The debate follows recent government proposals for a secure cloud solution tailored to Swedish security operations, part of a broader European trend to reduce dependence on foreign-owned digital infrastructure. Earlier reports by SVT have explored whether individuals and organisations can function without American tech services, as well as the continent’s push to break what officials describe as a “digital dependency.”
