Faroese parliament to vote again on gender-neutral job titles for MPs and government officials
The Faroese parliament, Løgtingið, will reconsider a proposal on Tuesday to introduce gender-neutral job titles for its members and government officials, reports Faroese public broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya.
The amendment, first approved in 2023, would allow parliamentarians to choose between løgtingsmaður (male MP) or løgtingskvinna (female MP), while government ministers could opt for landsstýrismaður (male minister) or landsstýriskvinna (female minister). Similar options would apply to the titles of public prosecutor (løgmaður/løgkvinna) and deputy prosecutor (varaløgmaður/varaløgkvinna).
Because the changes involve the Faroese Governance Act, two separate parliamentary sessions must approve the measure. The newly elected parliament will now take a position on the proposal, which was initially greenlit in May 2023.
If lawmakers vote to fast-track the issue, a special committee will be appointed during Tuesday’s session to handle the amendment.
