Faroe Islands school trial offers free daily meals to 500 students
A pilot programme in Tórshavn Municipality will provide around 500 students with free, nutritious meals each school day, the local government announced Monday.
The trial, launched this week, includes pupils in the lower grades at Eysturskúlin, middle grades at Skúlin á Fløtum, and all students at Kollafjarðar Skúli. Meals will be prepared in the production kitchen at Skúlin á Fløtum and transported to the other schools, according to the municipality’s statement.
Eysturskúlin will receive equipment to serve and eat the meals on-site, while Kollafjarðar Skúli’s participation will help test logistical solutions. A working group’s earlier survey found strong student interest in school meals, with many willing to pay a user fee to support the system.
The municipality is now seeking a head chef to lead the pilot. Funding will combine public resources with partial user fees, though the exact cost structure has not yet been detailed.
