The Faroe Islands may have the opportunity to connect to a new undersea telecommunications cable planned between Iceland and Scotland, according to Kristian Reinert Davidsen, project manager at Faroese Telecom (Føroya Tele).

Speaking to Faroese national broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya, Davidsen confirmed the possibility but noted that discussions are still in early stages. “The matter is new, and it also depends on what the terms are,” he said.

Icelandic public broadcaster RÚV reported Friday that FARICE, a state-owned Icelandic company, is working on a new cable project named Auður after the historical figure Auður the Deep-Minded, who is said to have stopped in the Faroe Islands on her journey from Norway to Iceland.

The existing FARICE cable currently runs from Iceland through the Faroe Islands to Scotland. The new Auður cable would create an additional direct link between Iceland and Scotland.
