Savonlinna drug raid uncovers hazardous materials and suspected production
A 33-year-old man has been remanded in custody on suspicion of drug offences after a joint operation by Finnish Customs and police in Savonlinna uncovered hazardous substances and evidence of possible narcotics manufacturing, Yle reports.
Customs lead inspector Marko Laitinen confirmed to Yle that the investigation centres on suspected drug crimes, including the production of illegal substances. The North Karelia District Court ordered the detention of the 33-year-old suspect on Friday, with the alleged offences spanning over two years in Savonlinna.
Authorities have not yet identified the specific drug involved. Samples collected during the raid are being analysed at both Customs and police forensic laboratories—a process Laitinen noted could take months. “This is a complex case because proving drug production requires substantial evidence,” he said.
The operation, which targeted a single residence in Savonlinna’s Kinttupolku area, lasted several days due to the time required to secure hazardous materials. Emergency services were also present as a precaution. “The site was labour-intensive, and a large volume of varied items were seized,” Laitinen added, explaining that protective gear was necessary due to the dangerous substances found.
A second man was briefly detained but later released. The investigation originated from an unrelated drug case in North Karelia, though Laitinen stressed it does not currently appear to be part of a larger network. Prosecutors must file charges by 30 June, with the case set to be heard in the South Savo District Court.
