A proposed ban on social media use for children under 15 in the Faroe Islands should not be implemented without first assessing international experience, according to cybersecurity expert Torben Voss Nielsen.

Speaking to Faroese national broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya, Nielsen, a specialist at the government’s KT agency, cautioned that while setting an age limit may appear straightforward, enforcing it presents significant challenges.

“It’s easy to say we should ban it, but ensuring compliance is another matter entirely,” Nielsen stated. He recommended waiting to observe how similar measures have worked in other countries before proceeding.

The comments follow discussions about new legislation aimed at restricting young people’s access to social platforms.
