1,260 schoolchildren gather for national chess finals in Denmark

A record 1,260 students from across Denmark have convened in Grindsted for the national finals of Skolernes Skakdag (School Chess Day), competing for the title of “Chess School of the Year 2026” and prizes totaling 50,000 kroner, reports Danish broadcaster DR.

The event marks the culmination of this year’s School Chess Day, which set a participation record in February with 61,862 students from 363 schools taking part in preliminary rounds. Organizers describe the finals as a “big and exciting experience” for the young competitors, with a focused atmosphere as players concentrate on their matches.
