Finland’s birth rate rises slightly after record low
Finland’s birth rate increased marginally in 2025 following a historic low the previous year, according to new data from Statistics Finland.
The total fertility rate rose to 1.30 children per woman, up from 1.25 in 2024—the lowest figure ever recorded in the country’s statistical history.
Birth rates improved in all regions except Päijät-Häme and Central Ostrobothnia, where levels remained unchanged.
The total fertility rate indicates the average number of children a woman would have if birth patterns remained constant. A rate of around 2.1 is considered necessary for population replacement.
