Police confiscate 22 licence plates overnight in Faroe Islands crackdown

Faroese police removed 22 vehicle licence plates overnight in the capital Tórshavn and on the island of Eysturoy, public broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya reports. The action comes as authorities intensify enforcement against unpaid road and environmental fees.

Around 200 drivers have lost their plates in recent weeks, though many cases remain unresolved. The Faroese Road Administration has referred 799 cases of outstanding fees to police—an unusually high number, according to the report.

Owners who cannot prove payment of the first-half 2026 road and environmental tax risk having their plates confiscated. The crackdown follows repeated warnings to settle the mandatory fees, which fund infrastructure and environmental initiatives.

Drivers whose plates are seized must resolve their debt and pay additional administrative costs to have them reinstated.
