The Faroese public prosecutor has yet to decide whether to press charges in the 2024 Hvannasund whale hunt case, where local leaders and officials face allegations of animal welfare law violations, Kringvarp Føroya reports.

Sea Shepherd Global, an international marine conservation group, filed a complaint against the district sheriff and whale hunt organisers over the prolonged killing of pilot whales during the summer 2024 hunt. The incident followed a rowing competition in Norðoyggjar, where participants were delayed in arriving to assist with the hunt.

District sheriff Michael Boolsen, who is handling the case, stated that the legal process remains unresolved. Until a decision is reached, no whale hunts will be permitted in the Norðoyggjar region while the organisers remain under investigation for breaching animal welfare regulations.

The case centres on accusations that the extended duration of the hunt—lasting several hours while waiting for reinforcements—violated Faroese laws protecting animal welfare during traditional whale drives.
