A former employee of the Pirkanmaa welfare region in Finland is suspected of aggravated fraud and multiple counts of identity theft after allegedly transferring funds to fabricated social assistance recipients, national broadcaster Yle reports.

The Interior Finland Police Department confirmed on Tuesday that the suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, is accused of illegally transferring approximately €30,000 to fictitious income support clients. The suspect denies the allegations.

Authorities received the initial crime report in November 2024. The investigation has now concluded, and prosecutors began reviewing the case for potential charges last week.

The Pirkanmaa welfare region first disclosed the suspected misconduct earlier on Tuesday, stating that a former staff member was believed to have created false benefit recipients and diverted public funds to them.
