Two Faroese researchers intend to excavate long-buried British machine gun positions near Skálafjørður, according to a report by Faroese national broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya.

The concrete emplacements—known locally as maskinbyrsureiður—were constructed during World War II as part of British defences to protect the fjord. Five such positions were built but have since been covered over.

Historian Janus Jensen and Alfred Olsen now aim to uncover the nests to document the military history of the site. Their work was featured in the broadcaster’s Dagur og vika programme.

No timeline for the excavation has been announced.
