Faroese student team wins Danish entrepreneurship championship with fish-based vitamin project
A team of Faroese school students has won Denmark’s national entrepreneurship competition for young learners with a project turning fish byproducts into vitamins, reports Faroese broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya.
The group, named SjóGló, secured first place at the finals in Kolding, competing against students from Denmark, Greenland, and the Faroe Islands. The contest, open to eighth- and ninth-grade pupils, evaluates innovation, sustainability, and global perspective in business ideas.
SjóGló’s project focuses on extracting vitamins from fish waste, creating a new, high-value product from underused Faroese raw materials. The Danish jury highlighted the project’s timeliness, thorough preparation, and the team’s boldness in tackling such an ambitious task without prior experience.
The four-member team—Nikolina Flora Højgaard Kristjansdóttir, Bjørk Dánjalsdóttir Absalonsen, Elin Joensen, and Heiðrun Torbjørnsdóttir Lisberg—attends the ninth grade at Eysturskúlin school in Tórshavn. Their teachers, Asta Eysturdal Nielsen and Johann J. Petersen, supervised the project.
SjóGló had previously won the Faroese school competition SkúlaFM 2026, organised by the Faroese Innovation House in collaboration with the Ministry of Education.
