Pirkanmaa welfare region reports suspected fraud involving fake benefit recipients
The Pirkanmaa welfare region in Finland has filed a criminal report against a former employee suspected of transferring tens of thousands of euros to fabricated social assistance recipients, the regional public broadcaster Yle reports.
Authorities allege the former worker, whose employment with the welfare region has since ended, unauthorizedly directed funds to non-existent benefit claimants. The suspected misconduct came to light during the region’s internal oversight procedures.
“Such incidents are extremely rare, but we always take them very seriously and investigate thoroughly to ensure public trust in our operations,” said Minna Kuusela, director of social services for the Pirkanmaa welfare region, in a statement.
The welfare region has not disclosed further details, stating only that the sum involved amounts to tens of thousands of euros. The case remains under investigation.
