Faroese prosecutor files charges against Bakkafrost over transport violations
The Faroese public prosecutor has filed charges against salmon farming company Bakkafrost for breaching transport regulations, national broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya reports.
Prosecutors initially considered multiple charges but have now narrowed the case to two counts related to violations of transport documentation requirements. Other potential charges—including alleged breaches of lice reporting rules linked to delousing operations—have been dropped.
The decision follows an investigation by police in collaboration with the Faroese Food and Veterinary Authority and the public prosecutor’s office in Tórshavn. Authorities described the case as complex, involving extensive evidence review from both the regulatory agency and Bakkafrost.
Police acknowledged that prolonged pre-trial investigations are not ideal but stated that both law enforcement and prosecutors must ensure proceedings move as quickly as possible. The case will now proceed in the Faroese Court, with a trial date to be set.
Some charges were dismissed either because the statute of limitations had expired or because the evidentiary burden could not be met.
