Social Democrats invite Liberal leader to coffee after constitutional law misstep
The Social Democrats have invited Liberal Party leader Simona Mohamsson for coffee to discuss Sweden’s constitutional laws after her widely noted struggle to name them in a television interview, SVT Nyheter reports.
Ida Karkiainen, a Social Democrat MP and former chair of the Constitutional Committee, said she wants to share her experience working with constitutional issues. “It’s important that we collaborate to safeguard our constitutional laws,” she stated.
Mohamsson’s difficulty in recalling Sweden’s four constitutional laws during SVT’s interview program Fördomsshowen prompted the invitation. Karkiainen described the moment as revealing “a gap in knowledge about our constitutional laws, especially the Instrument of Government,” adding that such knowledge is “fairly basic” for politicians at this level.
While acknowledging the pressure of live interviews, Karkiainen stressed the need for cooperation across parties to protect the constitution from potential authoritarian threats. “I’ve worked on constitutional issues for many years,” she said. “It’s crucial that the Social Democrats and the Liberals, as long as they remain in parliament, work together to uphold the constitution.”
SVT has sought comment from Mohamsson.
