A Finnish nature photographer has documented an extraordinary moment when a lynx approached a nesting site shared by cranes and swans, reports Finnish public broadcaster Yle.

Atte Henriksson, a journalist and wildlife photographer, was filming a live broadcast of cranes for Yle when the unexpected encounter unfolded. On the ninth day of the livestream near a small forest lake in eastern Uusimaa, Henriksson noticed the cranes’ unusually loud calls. Initially assuming more birds were arriving, he soon spotted a large lynx moving along the shoreline.

“Something brown and shaggy flashed by at first,” Henriksson recounted. “Then I realised—it was a lynx, and not just any lynx, but a really big one.”

The lynx appeared curious rather than aggressive, pacing along the shore as the cranes called loudly. “It just wandered around, almost like it was wondering what all the noise was about,” Henriksson said. “Maybe it was a little annoyed at the cranes for making such a racket.”

For Henriksson, this was his second lynx sighting, but the first time the animal came so close. The chance overlap of the lynx’s path with the birds’ nesting area made the moment exceptionally rare. “I don’t know if it was luck or what, but this was something special,” he said. “Even the lynx seemed a bit bewildered by all the commotion on the lake.”

The livestream, broadcast from a secret location to protect the birds during nesting season, has drawn over 300,000 viewers since it began. The current ten-day broadcast ends on Saturday but will resume in May if the cranes’ nesting progresses as expected.
