Dentists report increased oral health issues linked to nicotine pouch use in Denmark
Dentists across the country are increasingly observing a variety of oral health issues among patients using nicotine pouches, including discolored teeth, receding gums, and damaged mucous membranes. A recent survey conducted by the Dental Association revealed that 59% of dentists have noticed “more” or “many more” patients suffering from the consequences of nicotine pouches and snus.
Susanne Kleist, the chairwoman of the Dental Association, expressed concern over these statistics, indicating a rapid rise in the consumption of snus and nicotine pouches. She advocates for a complete ban on these products, citing that the problem predominantly affects young individuals.
Eighteen-year-old Sophia Jørgensen echoes this concern, noting that many of her peers use snus primarily due to peer influence. She has been using snus since she was 14 and recently faced alarming revelations during a dental visit, where early damage from her usage was identified. Since being referred to a cessation program, she has abstained from nicotine pouches since July.
The repercussions of nicotine pouch use can be severe, with potential lifelong damage such as gum recession. While Jørgensen’s discoloration will fade, she hopes legislators will address the issue seriously, favoring more stringent regulations to deter usage.
Despite existing legal sales of nicotine pouches to individuals over 18 in Denmark, some politicians are advocating for stricter measures. In November 2023, a prevention plan was introduced, prohibiting unusual flavors beyond mint and menthol and increasing prices. However, the Radicals believe these measures do not go far enough and argue for even steeper price hikes and a ban on mint flavors.
While some politicians are cautious about increasing the legal age for purchasing nicotine products, discussions about further regulatory measures are ongoing. Concerns about adult autonomy in making choices surrounding nicotine products remain a contentious point within the nicotine industry.
