Construction firms in Esbjerg and Varde municipalities must now transport clean surplus soil hundreds of kilometres across Jutland, after local authorities banned its disposal in nearby gravel pits, reports Danish broadcaster DR.
The decision aims to protect potential future drinking water sources, even though the gravel pits in question have been used for years and contain groundwater already deemed unusable for consumption by Esbjerg Municipality.
Haulage companies and contractors responsible for moving the soil have criticised the new restrictions, which force them to transport the material far beyond the local area.
