Brákarborg preschool opening postponed due to construction issues in Reykjavík
The opening of the Brákarborg preschool in Reykjavík will be postponed following the summer break due to issues identified in its construction. Instead of returning to their original location, the children will temporarily relocate to Ármúla, where elementary school activities previously took place, due to mold problems in other nearby schools.
Parents of Brákarborg students received a letter informing them of the necessary changes. The preschool, which started operating two years ago, was found to have fine cracks in several walls and misaligned doors. A structural assessment revealed that the building’s roof does not meet current design standards, prompting the decision to undertake repair work. This process is expected to take a few months to ensure all safety requirements are met.
In the meantime, children will attend classes in Ármúla, delaying the reopening of Brákarborg by approximately two days after summer holidays. The city has formally notified all contractors and consultants involved in the preschool’s construction about potential design or construction flaws, indicating that the issue of responsibility will be investigated.
