New road opens in Hrafnagil to enhance traffic safety in Eyjafjarðarsveit
A new road in Hrafnagil has been opened, aiming to enhance traffic safety in the village. Traffic has now been diverted onto this new route east of the Hrafnagil neighborhood in Eyjafjarðarsveit, which previously ran directly through the village. Construction to relocate the road began in 2022, a decision prompted by significant population growth and development in the area. The local population has more than doubled since 2006, reaching a total of 379 residents.
The municipality of Eyjafjarðarsveit requested the road’s relocation primarily to improve traffic safety, as traffic speed through the village had been a concern. The move also frees up valuable land for future construction projects.
Hermann Ingi Gunnarsson, the mayor of Eyjafjarðarsveit, described the new road as revolutionary. Residents in the neighborhood have already noted a significant difference and expressed relief at not having to worry about children and pedestrian traffic in the area as vehicles pass through. He also mentioned that driving on the new road is enjoyable, highlighting its quality and pleasing design.
