Prosecution drops investigation into Miljödata after major data breach
The Swedish Prosecution Authority has closed its preliminary investigation into IT provider Miljödata for alleged gross data intrusion and attempted blackmail, SVT Nyheter reports. The decision follows a 2025 cyberattack that exposed personal data of over 1.5 million individuals.
The case, which involved suspicions of severe data breaches and extortion attempts, will not proceed to trial. Authorities have not disclosed the reasoning behind the decision to terminate the investigation.
The attack on Miljödata, a supplier of environmental data systems, was one of Sweden’s largest known data leaks, with sensitive information—including names, addresses, and personal identification numbers—compromised and later published on the darknet, according to earlier reports.
