A consortium led by Wallenberg Investments will inject €1.4 billion into Swedish steel producer Stegra, the company announced in a press release Monday.
The funding will complete construction of Stegra’s green steel plant in Boden, northern Sweden, according to reports from public broadcaster SVT Nyheter. Earlier this week, business daily Dagens Industri cited sources stating the Wallenberg family would become the company’s largest shareholder.
Leif Johansson, advisor to the Wallenberg-led consortium, said the investment reflects confidence in commercial green steel production despite remaining challenges. “We are convinced of the commercial viability of green steel while fully aware of the hurdles ahead,” Johansson stated. “This project is also vital for Sweden’s position as an industrial nation.”
