Faroese parliament’s longest-serving member sits in speaker’s chair for first time

The Faroese Parliament’s longest-serving member, Jenis av Rana, has sat in the speaker’s chair for the first time in his decades-long career, calling it a “good experience,” national broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya reports.

Jenis av Rana, 73, who has been a member of the Faroese Parliament (Løgtingið) since 1994, took the speaker’s seat during the first session of the newly elected parliament on Monday. “This was actually the first time I’ve ever sat in the speaker’s chair, so it was a good experience to be able to look out at people from a different perspective,” he said.

The veteran politician confirmed this would be his final term, ruling out running again at age 77. “But if there’s a new election before then, I won’t rule out standing again,” he added.
