Six new Faroese MPs enter parliament with no prior national political experience

Six of the seven new substitute MPs taking seats in the Faroese parliament have no prior experience in national politics, public broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya reports.

The change follows the appointment of new government ministers, requiring sitting MPs to resign their parliamentary seats while serving in cabinet. Under Faroese law, substitute candidates from the same party lists fill the vacancies.

The seven new MPs represent three parties. For the People’s Party, Fía Selma Nielsen (327 votes), Astrið Breckmann (322 votes), and Kristian Krog Hentze (297 votes) enter parliament. The Union Party gains Magni Højgaard (342 votes) and Anna Falkenberg (272 votes), while the Social Democratic Party welcomes Bjørt Lind (287 votes) and Eyðgunn Samuelsen (263 votes).

Only Eyðgunn Samuelsen has prior parliamentary experience. Fía Selma Nielsen briefly served as a substitute MP last year, replacing Árna Skaale, but the remaining five are entirely new to national politics.

The shift also increases female representation in the Faroese parliament from ten to thirteen MPs. Two women left for cabinet positions, while five of the seven new substitutes are women.
