The Faroese Parliament, Løgtingið, has confirmed Beinir Johannesen as the new prime minister of the Faroe Islands, reports Kringvarp Føroya. The 26-year-old politician, leader of the People’s Party (Fólkaflokkurin), was elected with 26 votes in favour and seven blank ballots.

Johannesen’s appointment follows a coalition agreement signed on Thursday by the People’s Party, the Union Party (Sambandsflokkurin), and the Social Democratic Party (Javnaðarflokkurin). The deal, announced earlier this week, named Johannesen—now the youngest prime minister in Faroese history—as the candidate for the premiership. However, under Faroese parliamentary rules, the final decision rested with Løgtingið, which convened today to formalise the vote.

In his address following the vote, Johannesen described the election result as a rejection of bloc politics, which he argued had dominated previous terms. He expressed satisfaction with the formation of a broad coalition uniting the three largest parties, signalling a shift in the political landscape.

The new government’s cabinet includes:

  • Bárður á Steig Nielsen – Minister of Foreign Affairs and Fisheries, and Deputy Prime Minister
  • Aksel V. Johannesen – Minister of Finance
  • Jacob Vestergaard – Minister of Labour
  • Eyðdis Hartmann Niclasen – Minister of Health and Energy
  • Margit Stórá – Minister of Social Affairs and Housing
  • Bárður á Lakjuni – Minister of Culture
