Faroese parliament convenes as new government is appointed
The Faroese parliament, Løgtingið, will hold its first session on Monday at 10:00 local time, followed by the formal appointment of a new government at 14:00, reports Faroese national broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya.
The session marks the start of the new parliamentary term, with Jenis av Rana of the Centre Party—at 73, the oldest member—presiding as tradition dictates. The first order of business will be the approval of election results and credentials, after which newly elected MPs must resign from any government-appointed boards or committees, except where direct public election applies.
Parliament will then elect a new speaker and three deputy speakers. The final agenda item is a proposal to nominate Beinir Johannesen, leader of the People’s Party, as prime minister (løgmaður). Johannesen, first elected in 2019 and party leader since March 2022, previously served as deputy chair of the Culture Committee and as a member of the Foreign Affairs and Industry Committees.
At 14:00, a ceremonial event at Tinganes—the government headquarters in Tórshavn—will see Johannesen announce his six-minister cabinet:
– Aksel V. Johannesen (Finance)
– Bárður á Lakjuni (Education and Research)
– Bárður á Steig Nielsen (Foreign Affairs and Fisheries)
– Eyðdis Hartmann Niclasen (Health and Energy)
– Jacob Vestergaard (Labour)
– Margit Stórá (Social Affairs)
Outgoing ministers Sirið Stenberg, Eirikur í Jákupsstovu, Ruth Vang, and Djóni Nolsøe Joensen will formally leave office, while Aksel V. Johannesen and Margit Stórá continue in reshuffled roles. The new ministers will assume their duties after individual audiences with the prime minister on Tuesday.
Kringvarp Føroya will broadcast the ceremony live on radio, television, and its website from 13:00.
