Prosecutors in Finland have upgraded charges against three individuals in connection with a fatal attack in Oulu, now classifying the case as murder rather than manslaughter, public broadcaster Yle reports.

The three suspects—two men and one woman, all in their early 30s—face charges of aggravated deprivation of liberty and murder over the death of a 25-year-old Oulu man in October 2025. Prosecutors are seeking life imprisonment for the murder conviction.

A fourth individual has been charged with lesser offences linked to the case, including illegal threats, attempted extortion, and incitement to assault. The suspects have largely denied the allegations, according to the prosecution.

Police previously stated that debt collection related to an earlier violent incident in Mannerheim Park may have motivated the killing. The case is scheduled for trial in Oulu District Court next week.
