Faroese authorities ban municipalities from installing speed bumps on national roads
The Faroese Road Administration (Landsverk) has prohibited municipalities from placing speed bumps on national roads, a decision now upheld by the national complaints board, Kærustovnurin, reports Faroese broadcaster Kringvarp Føroya.
The ban follows a municipal request to install two speed bumps to create a winter-safe zone. Landsverk rejected the application, citing high maintenance costs and winter operation risks. Speed bumps require frequent upkeep and can interfere with snowploughs, leading to equipment and vehicle damage in past incidents.
Landsverk is actively reducing speed bumps on national roads, instead recommending alternative traffic-calming measures such as fencing or raised pedestrian crossings.
