Salvage operations are underway in Rovaniemi to recover a light aircraft that sank into the Kemijoki River on Thursday, Finnish public broadcaster Yle reports. The effort involves divers, a helicopter, and controlled water flow adjustments from local hydropower plants.

The aircraft was deliberately submerged and anchored to the riverbed to prevent it from being swept away by strong currents. While the Lapland Rescue Department initially managed the operation, responsibility has now shifted to the plane’s owner, who will cover recovery costs—including the helicopter hired for Friday’s operation. Rescue divers remain on site to assist.

Hydropower company Kemijoki Oy is reducing water discharge during the recovery to stabilize conditions, though production losses will occur. “We want to help in every way possible,” said operations manager Timo Heikkinen, noting the environmental risk posed by the submerged aircraft.

The pilot’s decision to land on the river’s ice—despite poor conditions and closed snowmobile routes—has raised questions. Authorities initially cited a technical fault but later clarified the plane had no mechanical issues. Heikkinen called the choice “incomprehensible” if made deliberately.

The aircraft’s owner declined to comment when contacted by Yle.
